I love God’s Word because through the smallest things, I find encouragement. We are disappointed when things don’t turn out the way we plan. We question God and even struggle with His omniscient answers. We believe His promises but the delays often overwhelm me….I mean us! But could it be that what He desires for us is undergoing a process, much like we are? See, Adam was living in a beautiful garden. His life was the epitome of grace. He was effortlessly living under God’s rule. It did not seem like Adam needed help but the sovereign God looked beyond the garden and knew a helper was needed, but not just any helper. The helper had to be suitable.
“Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.” Genesis 2:19-20
Suitable is defined as having the qualities that are right, needed, or appropriate for a particular person, purpose, or situation.
Could it be you are still single because the process of making you suitable is not yet complete? Could it be you did not get the job because the position was not suitable as it relates to your purpose and destiny? Could it be they did not accept your offer on the house because in God’s sight the place is not suitable for His child?
A process had to take place in order for that which was considered by God to be suitable to come forth. But notice, Adam was content where God placed him. Adam was working the land, naming the animals…simply being obedient to God. It was God who determined that something else was needed. Not Adam. So God did what only God could do.
“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.” Genesis 2:21-22
Not only did God determine the need, He provided for the need. But notice the process did not begin until Adam went to sleep. God did not need help, Adam did! When we stop trying to help God, relinquish control, and receive His peace, then and only then will His work begin.
Do you realize the first words ever spoken from Adam’s mouth were uttered when he saw Eve? His reaction to what God considered suitable was, “THIS IS IT!” Some versions say, “FINALLY” or “AT LAST!”
I don’t know about you, but this excites me! This process seems a bit more enduring knowing there could be a “This Is It!” at the end. I also love the fact that God loves us so much that if your suitable or my suitable does not exist, He will create it for us!
Some of you may be asking, was Eve really suitable for Adam? Eve’s conversation with the serpent contributed to the fall of man. True. But had there never been an Eve, there would have never been a Seth, which means there would have never been a Noah, which ultimately would have left us hopeless because there would have never been a Jesus.
